Rein back is a difficult exercise for any horse. It’s easier to teach from the ground in-hand, without the weight of a rider. The horse should have a certain roundness before starting rein back. The hind legs should be vertical under the horse not out behind. Teach the horse to side step and shoulder-in to gather himself. Use an ordinary cavason don’t be tempted to tie him down with gadgets to force him into a posture . When side steps are good and easy, side step him from the centre/three quarter line to the wall arriving parallel to the wall- keep the steps small and slow to conserve his roundness. On arriving at the wall halt softly, his hind legs should be vertical under him without any resistance or contraction. Without too much delay at halt ask with the voice and at the same time with your legs apart lean your body in the direction you want the horse to step back. Only use a gentle vibration of the lead line on the nose ring on the cavason to keep the head and neck straight and low - do not use force. If the horse try’s to move forward just fix your hand in place- don’t force him back . Usually the horse will back away from your fixed hand and take his first step back immediately relax your hand and make much of your horse. One or two steps is sufficient to begin. After his rein back ask the horse to move forward a few steps. Try and keep the horse calm and soft, reward the slightest obedience. When ridden make sure the horse knows half pass well. Same principle, use half pass to take him to the wall and halt in balance. Ask rein back mainly with your back and seat, keep legs relaxed. Hands very soft, do not take on the reins- if the horse trys to step forward fix your hand in place, don’t pull backwards. When the horse feels a fixed hand they usually move away ( back) from the pressure, immediately relax your hand. If the horse does not cooperate, move calmly forward, relax the horse and yourself, then begin again from halfpass and ask again. General principle - calm , forward and straight in all things. I raised a Morgan type filly who was still nursing. I used a coke bottle and calf manna. When she was about a year old I borrowed a horse trailer and parked it in the yard. She had never seen a horse trailer and I thought she needed the experience. She was loose in the yard. I started up the ramp with a bit of grain to put it in the trailer and she saw me with the grain. When I started up the ramp I heard clop clop behind me as she came right up after me. She ate the grain, sniffed everything in the trailer ,stuck her head out the window and looked around and then followed me back down the ramp. I never did use the lead rope. She thouroughly enjoyed the adventure.

This is a very nice non showy training session that certainly does use well timed pressure release, despite the comments, combined with positive reinforcement in the touch. It’s important I think that PR does not get negative association unnecessarily and that we recognise what the methods are without the need for judgement to better learn and understand what makes it work. Thank you.
